When I was told that I would become a diver for the Squam Lakes Association, I never knew that it would lead me to something I have grown so passionate about. Prior to joining the Lakes Region Conservation Corps, diving had always been something I’d wished to conquer, though I never had the time or means to do so. I have been snorkeling in places as far as Alaska and Aruba, yet I always wished I could get the full experience of diving. Learning to dive and becoming a diver to aid in the removal of invasive variable milfoil on Squam were amongst some of the many things that initially drew me here.
In just three short months, I have gone from being unsure of my abilities to dive in a pool and feeling uncomfortable breathing out of a large metal cylinder strapped to my back to truly enjoying my time diving on Squam. My first ever dive was exhilarating, yet challenging, as I constantly had to remind myself to breathe continuously. Having graduated from diving in a pool, to seeing various shipwrecks in the depths of Lake Winnipesaukee, and now being able to remove milfoil, I can see my own skills and comfort level improve with each dive I take. The opportunity to learn to dive for this position has been unique, rewarding and fun. I hope to continue diving long after leaving the Squam Lakes Association with the skills and knowledge that I now have under my (weight) belt!
